Bookroo's summary

Ten-year-old Albie feels overshadowed by his classmates and pressured by his parents' expectations. Enter Calista, his new babysitter, who sees beyond his struggles. As Albie navigates school and self-doubt, Calista helps him uncover hidden talents and embrace his unique abilities. Can Albie find his own path to self-worth in a world that values perfection? This heartwarming journey explores the power of self-discovery and the courage to be yourself.

"Words that make my dad slam his fist on the table and call my teacher to shout about setting up a parent-teacher conference, and my mom to go out and buy fruit. When Mom comes back with strawberries, her face is always crystal clear. Not an almost-crying face at all."

Talk about it together

Talk to your child about their strengths and weaknesses. Ask how they relate to Albie in their struggles--do they ever feel discouraged or picked on? Tell your child what you think their strengths are, and remind them that like Albie learns, kindness is one of the best qualities you can have!

Absolutely Almost addresses bullying, so talk with your child about what Albie learns to help someone else who is being bullied or what to do if you’re being bullied.

5.3

This book has such a powerful message! The babysitter does a fabulous job helping Albie realize his talents and gain confidence in himself. Albie is a refreshing character who you instantly love--not because he's special or super talented, but because he has learned to love himself and is genuine.
