Can I buy books with my education funding?

Accepted Answer

Yes — every program we work with funds books, and each one calls it something a little different. The question that actually matters is how you buy, because that changes completely depending on where your funding comes from. Find your program below and we'll show you the right path.

Which programs does Bookroo work with?

Accepted Answer

Four, covering more than a dozen states between them:
Odyssey — Utah Fits All, Wyoming ESA, MOScholars, Georgia Promise
ClassWallet — Arkansas EFA, South Carolina ESTF, Alabama CHOOSE, New Hampshire EFA
Step Up For Students — Florida, including PEP and FES-UA
Venture Rewards — Arizona, Hawai'i, Idaho, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Wyoming
Not all of these are ESAs. Education savings accounts, education freedom accounts, tax-credit scholarships, promise scholarships, and partner-school rewards all work differently — but they all buy books.

Question 3

I'm in a state that appears twice. Which one am I?

Accepted Answer

Go by where your money comes from, not by your state. Wyoming and Arizona families might have a state account or a Venture Reward through a partner school — and the two are spent in completely different places. If you log in to a state portal to see your balance, you're on the first list. If you submit order forms through your school's Basecamp, you're on the second.

Question 4

How do I know Bookroo is actually approved — not just claiming to be?

If you're on Odyssey or ClassWallet, don't take our word for it. Log in to your portal and search for "Bookroo". If we're in your vendor list, we can be paid straight from your student's account — that's confirmation from a source that isn't us, and it takes ten seconds.
Florida and Venture don't work that way — there's no vendor list to search, because in both, what governs is the program's own written rules about what's reimbursable. Those pages quote the relevant language and link to the source document, so you can read it yourself.

Question 5

I'm a teacher, principal, or PTO — not a parent. Am I in the right place?

Not quite. Everything on this page is for families spending their own student's education funds, and none of those programs can pay for a classroom. Schools have their own set of funds — Title I, Title IV-A, state materials money, PTOs — and our classroom funding page walks through each one.

Question 6

I don't have funding yet. Can I apply through you?

No — we're a vendor, not a program. Each one runs its own application on its own schedule, and most windows open in the spring. Your program's page links to the office that handles it.

Question 8

Can I just buy on your website and submit the receipt?

In Florida, yes — that's the right way to do it. Step Up's guides say the SFO will reimburse families for eligible purchases and that buying outside their platform is expressly allowed. Buy from us directly and our invoice tool builds an itemized invoice for the claim.
One thing worth knowing before a large order: reimbursement is your SFO's decision, and their purchasing guides are revised each year. It's worth a look at the current one.
Everywhere else, no — and in two of them it will cost you real money. Several programs don't reimburse families at all, so a retail purchase is simply your own money spent. Venture Rewards can't reimburse a family either; the Reward pays for what's on the order form and nothing else. The programs that do reimburse are running long queues, and some compare your price against what's already in their marketplace before they pay.

Question 9

Why do I need an invoice before I order?

Only in the ClassWallet states — Arkansas, South Carolina, Alabama and New Hampshire — because that platform's Pay Vendor flow is built around one. You upload the invoice, your program approves the amount, and ClassWallet releases the funds to us.
Add a club to your cart, then use our invoice tool to generate the PDF — it asks for your child's name and your program, and nothing is charged to you. Odyssey and Venture families skip this entirely. Florida families get an invoice too, but afterwards — itemized for reimbursement and generated from the order.

Question 10

How long does approval take?

Accepted Answer

Your program decides that, not us. It's slowest right after funds land, when everyone files at once, and Venture requests over a certain amount carry an extra review step. Once you're approved, your first box ships as soon as the payment arrives.

Question 11

Is there a limit on how much I can spend on books?

Accepted Answer

None of the programs we work with publishes a cap on books. Florida's guides go furthest and say it outright — books are "neither capped in annual spending nor subject to frequency of purchase."
What several programs do enforce is that a purchase be for one student's use, so it's one club per child rather than a family bundle.

Question 12

Can I buy for more than one child?

Accepted Answer

Yes — one order per child. Funding is awarded per student, and several programs require purchases to be for individual student use with no bulk orders. Check out once per child so each student has a clean invoice against their own account — and if you combine them, our invoice tool splits the order into one invoice per student.

Question 13

Will this auto-renew against my account?

Accepted Answer

No. We build funded orders as prepaid terms with no auto-renewal — one order, one approval, and nothing charged later without you asking for it. Several programs specifically don't approve subscriptions that renew on their own, so this isn't an optional extra.

Question 14

Is Bookroo a curriculum?

Accepted Answer

No, and it's worth knowing before you fill anything in. Bookroo is hand-picked hardcover literature — books, not a course of study.
Calling it curriculum causes friction in every program we work with. In Florida it can pull you into a pre-authorization step that "books" avoids entirely. Venture classifies us as a resource order, not a language arts course. And most state programs have a books or reading category that fits us exactly, sitting right next to a curriculum category that doesn't. Your program's page names the right one.

Question 15

Which club is right for my child?

Accepted Answer

Pick by grade, or by where your reader actually is — which you know better than any chart. If they're between two clubs, size up: a slightly harder book read together does more for a growing reader than an easy one read alone.
If a club turns out to be wrong, email support@bookroo.com and we'll move your child to the right level for the rest of the term. No charge, and no paperwork with your program.

Question 16

Do we keep the books?

Accepted Answer

Yes — re-read them, hand them down, leave them on the shelf. They're yours.
One exception: Minnesota Venture Rewards families. Materials bought with the Reward are the district's property and go back if your student withdraws mid-year. Plan the request the way you would a classroom library.

Question 17

Can I get a refund?

Accepted Answer

Not to your own card. This isn't your money — it's your student's funding — and programs prohibit a vendor paying, refunding or rebating those funds back to a family. Florida states it flatly: "A family shall not receive a payment, refund, or rebate of scholarship funds from a vendor or provider of any services."
What we can do is swap your child's club if the level turns out to be wrong, for the rest of the term, at no charge. That's what refunds usually exist to solve, and this handles it without anyone touching the money.
