This hide-and-seek themed board book about Little Chick looking for his Mother Hen is complete with touch-and-feel flaps made out of felt for a tangible and interactive experience. Little Chick looks for his mama in a tree, in a pond, and behind a gate before finally finding her by following a noise leading him to the chicken coop where his mama sits. While he’s searching, he encounters a bird (the least specific of the animals included, creating a lack of parallel in the story), a mother duck and her baby, and a goose. The limited variety of animals found in this book might also limit the interest it presents, though it also provides the prompt to discover the differences in the similar animals. The playful font creates a structured, whimsical feel to match but not detract from the boldly colored illustrations that make this story shine, using just six colors. The fresh and bold spring-time color scheme span the pages to embellish the creative take on Little Chick’s world with orange bushes and pink clouds. The shape of the book itself seems arbitrary, but Little Chick and the impressive color scheme makes this book a sweet addition to an Easter basket and an enjoyable read throughout the rest of the year.
