Written by Shirin Yim Bridges · Illustrated by Sophie Blackall
A young girl named Ruby navigates her life in a large household in China during the early 20th century.
In old China, Ruby dreams of university, defying the norm of marriage for girls. Her ambition sets her apart, challenging family expectations. Will her determination be enough to change her future?
Ruby is unlike most little girls in old China. Instead of aspiring to get married, Ruby is determined to attend university when she grows up, just like the boys in her family. Based upon the inspirational story of the author’s grandmother and accompanied by richly detailed illustrations, Ruby’s Wish is an engaging portrait of a young girl who’s full of ambition and the family who rewards her hard work and courage.

“I thought this was a very thoughtful book with a mature and meaningful message about the significance of education. I really enjoyed it, but I'm not positive all young readers will- It could feel a little boring to some. However, I thought it was a story that carries a necessary message- a message that could help those who are struggling with school.”
