Read Book 1 before Book 2: Feasts of Fury. The books collect connected comic adventures, and the second volume returns to Rutabaga, his magical cooking pot, and the fantasy world established in the first.
Rooty the Rutabaga is a separate picture book by Steven Megson, not a Rutabaga the Adventure Chef volume. It should not be included in this two-book sequence simply because the titles sound alike.

The fantasy comedy includes dragons, giant spiders, goblin-like creatures, swords, mild battles, and occasional talk of cooking imaginary monsters. The emphasis is on silly problem-solving and culinary curiosity, not frightening violence.
Each volume includes recipes children can make with real ingredients. Younger cooks will still need an adult's usual help with heat, sharp tools, allergies, and kitchen cleanup.
