Bookroo's summary

By the 1880s, hunters had nearly wiped out the buffalo that once covered the Great Plains. This story follows the effort to restock a wildlife preserve in Oklahoma Territory: fifteen buffalo from the New York Zoological Society are loaded onto a train, with three men guarding them on the 1,800-mile trip.

From the publisher

Although millions of buffalo once covered the great plains, the animals were hunted almost to extinction in the 1880s. This is the story of efforts to establish a wildlife preserve in Oklahoma Territory and begin redevelopment of the herds. Fifteen buffalo from the New York Zoological Society were loaded onto a train, and three men were assigned to stand guard on the 1,800-mile trip. The author, a public library consultant, lives in Bethany, Oklahoma.
