This is a beautiful book. It tells a simple, truthful story hitting on the difficult topics of grief and poverty. The sensitive language and muted illustrations convey respect. I love the natural way this story teaches lessons on love and respect, generosity, community, and kindness.

Absolutely heartwarming. A poor little girl isn't able to go to school because her help is needed at home. When she's finally about to go, she can't because she doesn't have a coat. After dealing with her father's death, all the neighborhood women gather together to make her dream coat, just like Joseph's colorful one. It's made of scraps that each tell a story and hold a memory, and when it's finished, she shares how special it is with her friends as they admire their own pieces in the coat.
