Jake’s excited about going on a trip to an island, and he really, really, really wants to see a moose. But his dad insists that there are no moose on this island. But both Jake and a friendly moose would like to disagree! In playful rhymes, author Stephanie Calmenson brings the reader along with Jake and his dad, as they explore the mammals, birds, insects, and sea life on and around the island. With graceful illustrations by Jennifer Thermes, Jake”and the reader”start to see the moose, a little bit at a time, but Dad’s either got his nose in a book or binoculars glued to his eyes. In the end, it’s Jake who shows his dad the value of putting aside the guidebook and ferry schedule to truly experience the beauty and magic of the outdoors.
Stephanie grew up in Brooklyn New York, never imagining she’d become a writer. She began her professional life as an early childhood teacher and had the pleasure of reading to children and discovering which books captivate them. When budget cuts left her looking for work, she became a children’s book editor and got to see how a book is made. Planning to go back to teaching, Stephanie enrolled in a Master’s Program in Education at New York University where she took a course called, “Writing for Children.” Her very first story was published in a children’s magazine, and she was off and writing! Though much of her time is spent in front of a computer instead of in a classroom, she still thinks of herself as a teacher, speaking to children through her books.
Jennifer Thermes is the children’s book author and illustrator of Charles Darwin’s Around-the-World Adventure and an accomplished map illustrator. She lives in Connecticut.
