The Three Cool Kids live in a city lot where the grass has grown thin, and now noisy, dusty construction is going on next door. They dream of moving to the green, peaceful lot across the street. However, rumors of a big ferocious rat who lives in the sewer and won’t let anyone cross the street prevent the Kids from moving. Finally the noise, dust, and lack of grass become too much for them to bear, so one by one the Kids try to cross the street. It then becomes clear that there really is a rat in the sewer and that he really doesn’t want the Kids to get across the street…Through her witty text and colorful, energetic cut-paper images, Rebecca Emberley puts a new urban and decidedly cool slant on the favorite old folktale, “The Three Billy Goats Gruff.”
