Summary: Thirteen-year-old Jordan McKenzie has just moved to rural Michigan, where she admires the giant draft horses on nearby Amish and Mennonite farms. At a livestock auction she spends all her savings, without her mom's permission, to rescue Star Gazer, a lame and neglected mare headed for slaughter. With help from her Mennonite friend Jacob, Jordan nurses the mare back to health and learns to drive a team, hoping to beat Star Gazer's former owner in the log-pulling contest at the state fair.
