It is the rabbit who keeps one carrot too many, the peacock who cannot bear to share a page, the shy child who carries a letter outside because somebody is counting on her. Children learn words such as generous, vain, cautious, loyal, and resilient when a story lets them watch those qualities make something happen — and, just as importantly, when it gives them enough evidence to disagree about which word fits best.
Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 1,613 books about character traits, our editors chose fifteen stories with personalities worth examining rather than fifteen tidy lectures about being good.
