The Best Children’s Books About Heroes

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 29, 2026

A hero is easiest to recognize after the danger arrives. Before that, it may be a timid chicken, an unnoticed librarian, a small mouse on a space shuttle, or an apprentice who would rather not be tested today. The strongest books about heroes make courage concrete: someone sees what must be done, accepts the cost, and acts while fear is still very much in the room. Capes are welcome, but they are not required.

Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 1,552 children’s books about heroes, our editors chose fourteen stories that range from everyday bravery and true rescues to folk legend, wartime service, comic reversals, and full-scale fantasy quests. Start with the shortlist, then browse by age for sturdy first books, read-alouds about unlikely people who step up, and longer stories that ask what separates a real hero from someone who merely wants the title.
