Boy and Bot
Two new friends each decide the other one is broken, and each reaches for entirely the wrong repair kit.
Children fall for robots twice. The first time is about the noise — a toddler crossing the kitchen flat-footed with locked elbows going BEEP BOOP, because a robot is the easiest thing in the world to pretend to be. The second time arrives years later, somewhere in the middle of a novel, when a machine that was never built to feel anything decides to raise a gosling, or leaves a friend rusting in a field, and a nine-year-old has to set the book down for a minute. Everything else lives between those two robots: the ones that build sandcastles, the ones that drive around Mars for fifteen years, and the ones that turn out to have been paying attention the whole time.
Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 522 robot books, our editors chose fourteen that cover that whole distance — chunky board books for children who mostly want to make the sound effects, early readers a five-year-old can finish without help, coding stories that slip sequences and loops past a kid who insists they hate math, and middle grade novels that use a machine to ask what exactly makes somebody a person. Start with the shortlist, then work down the age shelves below, from first board books to the chapter books nobody puts down when the lights go off.
