The Best Sailing Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 27, 2026

A sailboat looks serene from shore because the shore cannot hear the skipper changing the plan. On board, the wind has shifted, the sandwich has slid under a seat, somebody has tied the useful knot to the wrong thing, and a child who was bored five minutes ago is suddenly steering. Sailing stories understand that small-boat mixture of freedom and consequence: the crew can go anywhere the water reaches, provided they pay attention to weather, rigging, one another, and the inconvenient fact that the boat never stops being a boat.

Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 83 sailing books, our editors chose thirteen that earn their sea legs: Arthur Ransome’s island-camping classic, the Newbery-winning life of navigator Nathaniel Bowditch, a transatlantic family voyage, a Little Golden Book sailor dog, a true round-the-world trip with a hen, and two Newbery Honor adventures from the age of sail. Start with the fixed shortlist, then browse board books for the smallest deckhands, picture books about first trips and sudden squalls, and longer voyages for independent readers.
