The Best Theater Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated August 1, 2026

A play is the one art form children invent on their own before anyone teaches it to them. Give a five-year-old a blanket and a cardboard box and you get a set, a costume, and a plot within about four minutes. What theater adds is the terrifying part: other people, watching, at a fixed hour, whether or not you remember the words. That is why so many of these books are really about nerve—the audition you talk yourself out of, the line that vanishes under the lights, the part you wanted that went to someone else, and the discovery that the kid painting the set is holding the whole thing up just as much as the kid singing the solo.

Drawing on Bookroo’s collection of 312 theater books, our editors picked the ones that get it right: a girl who is told she cannot play Peter Pan and plays him anyway, a wombat who fails every audition in the Nativity play, the Globe rebuilt page by page in five acts, the worst kids in town hijacking the Christmas pageant, and a football player sentenced to drama rehearsal who accidentally becomes a director. Start with our fixed shortlist of 12 favorites, then browse by age and reading stage.
