A Series of Unfortunate Events Books

Start with The Bad Beginning and follow the publisher's numbering through The End. The mystery grows across all thirteen novels, Count Olaf's schemes carry from one book to the next, and later revelations depend on earlier clues, so this is a series to read in order.

Lemony Snicket: The Unauthorized Autobiography and The Beatrice Letters are optional companion books rather than volumes #14 and #15. They add documents, letters, and background connected to the larger mystery. Readers will get more from them after they know the series; neither is required to understand the thirteen-book story.

The series begins after the Baudelaire children's parents die in a house fire. The children face neglectful or dangerous guardians, kidnapping, attempted murder, frightening threats, fires, and the deaths of both villains and sympathetic characters. Loss and uncertainty continue through the final book.

The narrator's wordplay, absurd warnings, and direct comments to the reader make the books funny even when events are bleak. That comic distance works well for many middle-grade readers, but children who are sensitive to parental death, repeated peril, or stories where adults repeatedly fail children may appreciate reading the first book with an adult.
