How We Select Chapter Books

Most people are only familiar with a small number of children’s books—classics from their own childhoods or a few top sellers. While these titles can be terrific, they’re also a very limited part of the wonderful universe of children’s books.

We wanted to find and send books beyond this small handful, so we created the world’s largest platform dedicated entirely to children's books to discover amazing books by talented authors and illustrators that will become treasured favorites. We call these books our “hidden gems,” and we help families fill their bookcases with them.

Through our platform, we have access to thousands and thousands of children’s books. We combine this broad reach with in-depth reviews, ratings, and feedback from parents, kids, educators, and experts with decades of experience to finalize each month’s book selections.

Here are a few of our favorite chapter books from past boxes to help you have confidence in our book curation and get a feel for the types of books you can expect to receive in your monthly deliveries.

Ivy is determined to lend a hand, but the task proves more challenging when a series of unexpected refugees descends on Grandmother’s cottage. Before the week is over, an injured griffin, a dragon with a cold, and a tiny flock of temperamental pixies will cause a most untidy uproar in Broomsweep . . . and brighten Ivy’s days in ways she never could have dreamed.

chapter book
Recommend Ages: 8-12

From award-winning author Beth Vrabel comes a powerfully moving story about a magical friendship, coping with disability, and the pains of growing up and growing apart. Twelve-year-old Caleb is shorter, frailer, and more protected than most kids his age. That’s because he has cystic fibrosis, a diagnosis meaning lungs that fill with mucus and a shortened lifespan. Caleb tries not to let his disorder define him, but it can be hard with an overprotective mom and a perfect big brother. Then Caleb meets Kit—a vibrant, independent, and free girl—and his world changes instantly. Kit reads Caleb’s palm and tells him they are destined to become friends. She calls birds down from the sky and turns every day into an adventure. Her magic is contagious, making Caleb question the rules and order in his life. But being Kit’s friend means embracing deception and danger, and soon Caleb will have to decide if his friendship with Kit is really what’s best for him—or her. This new paperback edition includes a Q&A with the author as well as a sneak peek at Beth Vrabel’s next middle grade novel, The Humiliations of Pipi McGee.

Common Questions

How do you make sure the books are good?
+

Selecting books is our favorite part of the job, and we put our heart and soul into it! The process involves a huge amount of online research and in-person vetting including in-house experts, librarians, and real parents and kids. We know you already know about classic and popular children’s books, so we focus on finding hidden gems. For full details on our kids book club, check out our FAQs page.

Why not just buy books at the store or on Amazon?
+

If you like toting kids to the book store and trying to convince them to buy something other than TV-character delights, or spending hours doing your own book research in order to buy books online… go for it. If you want fantastic, curated books delivered on autopilot, let us help! (Plus, the retail value of the books we send always exceeds the subscription cost!)

If I sign up am I locked in? Are there any initiation, cancellation or hidden fees?
+

Nope! You can cancel at anytime by emailing [email protected] and one of our friendly customer advocates will help you.

What if I have too many books?
+

First off, we’ll argue that there’s no such thing, since books are amazing and research shows the more books in the home, the smarter your kids will be. But if you DO start running out of room, we have an every other month plan that allows you to slow the growth of your library! Also, consider donating some to underprivileged homes to make room for new ones!

What if I get a book I already have?
+

Since we’re all about hidden gems, it’s quite unlikely that you’ll get a book you already own (even avid bibliophiles!), but IF you do, just send us a picture of you giving the duplicate to a friend and we’ll add a $5 credit to your account.

What if I have kids in multiple age ranges?
+

Lucky you! Consider getting each of them their own subscription (yay!), setting up an alternating subscription for board and picture books, or create your own alternating subscription with chapter books and board or picture books by buying 2 every other month subscriptions. (***Bonus tip: If you have 2 subscriptions going to the same address, we have a special code that will give you 15% off the second subscription in perpetuity! Email [email protected]!)
