What to do if a rather insistent bear squats on your porch today? Followed in short order by a shaggy squirrel, a spraying skunk, a playful possum, and a bevy of forest critters large and small? This hilarious cumulative tale of reluctant hospitality and generous inclusivity will leave readers chanting, “OKAY. OKAY! YOU CAN STAY.” But watch out! That porch is starting to sway. . . . Jane Yolen’s uproarious chant-aloud story is brought to life by Rilla Alexander’s dazzling retro-hip illustrations in an exuberant collaboration sure to take its place alongside such cumulative classics as This is the House that Jack Built and There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly.
Jane Yolen (hailed as the “Aesop of the twentieth century”) has written more than 350 books, won numerous awards, and received six honorary doctorates in literature. She lives outside Springfield, Massachusetts, where a bear really did visit her porch.
Rilla Alexander has been making books since she was two. She would tell the story to her mother who’d type it onto her pictures and bind them into books complete with a biography. Her alter-ego Sozi stars in her books “Her Idea” and “The Best Book in the World” published by Flying Eye Books. Most recently she has illustrated Jane Yolen’s “A Bear Sat on my Porch Today” (Chronicle Books, 2018) and Lemony Snicket’s “Swarm of Bees” (Little Brown, 2019). Originally from Australia, Rilla has lived in London, Berlin and Portland (Oregon) and now calls Los Angeles home.
