In 1954 Missouri, sixth-grader Rosemary Patterson faces a new world after her school closes due to the Brown v. Board of Education decision. Determined to excel, she confronts racial challenges and forms an unexpected bond with Grace, a girl from a different background. As Rosemary's family deals with marital issues and her best friend battles polio, she learns resilience and tolerance. With support from a compassionate teacher, a wise storekeeper, and her enterprising mother, Rosemary discovers shared struggles and the power of perseverance.
