The Bookroo review

What our editors thought of Bookish Cats

Classics like Anna Karenina, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Frankenstein, and Romeo and Juliet are transformed into a cat lover’s paradise—Anna Purrenina by Leo Tailstoy, Charlie and the Catnip Factory by Roald Paw, Furankenstein by Meowry Shelley—using cat puns in both the title and author’s name. Each classic title is accompanied by an illustration that reimagines each novel’s protagonists as felines that ooze personality and contain iconic elements that make the highlighted classic unmistakeable. The departure from Rozelaar’s illustration style on The Litter Prince page is well-executed and adds to the appreciation literature lovers will have for this board book reimagination. Cat puns are the star of the show in this clever book best suited for those who adore cats as much as they do literature—while it may not be of universal appeal, in its intended niche it is sure to be a standout.

Talk about it together

Rozelaar takes classic titles (and their authors) and makes them punny with words associated with cats. As you read through, can you identify all of the "cat words"?

The illustrations tell a little bit of each classic story using cat protagonists. Can you use your knowledge of the original titles to give a brief description of each story as you read through?

For what it is—and it is exactly what it says it is: a collection of literary classics with a feline spin—it's very clever and well done.
