Dog pals Dubbin and Todd are going on a walk before breakfast: Dubbin on his skateboard and Todd lagging behind on paws. Not only that, Todd is also carrying a huge bone which is attracting attention from another, not so nice dog. Can Dubbin, Todd and the bone get home safely?
Dubbin has to be very patient with his little friend, Todd. Do you have a younger friend or a little brother or sister who you have to be patient with?
Little Todd sometimes gets into trouble and needs Dubbin to come to the rescue. Have you ever got into trouble and needed someone bigger than you to come to the rescue?
I live in Cambridge UK and write and illustrate picture books. I’ve been doing it for a long time and have been shortlisted for awards in the UK including the Kate Greenaway Medal and I won the US Parent’s Guide to Children’s Media Award for Outstanding Achievement in Children’s Books.
I love dogs but sadly haven’t got one so I put them in my books. ‘ Dog on Wheels’ is the first of three books about Dubbin and his doggie friend, Todd, who always gets into trouble. ‘Dog on Wheels at Sunny Sea’ is the next one, just published by Troika and ‘Dog on Wheels Goes Snowboarding’ will be coming out next year. It’s amazing what a dog can do with his skateboard!
There is a mysterious third dog following Dubbin and Todd, why is this dog not mentioned in the text?
I wanted to give the very young child the thrill of discovering this dog in the pictures while the text is being read aloud by an adult, and for the child to feel empowered to follow a visual story that is feeding into the textual narrative. I love using these visual sub-plots to add an exciting dynamic to a picture book.
