Stories behind the story

There is a mysterious third dog following Dubbin and Todd, why is this dog not mentioned in the text?

I wanted to give the very young child the thrill of discovering this dog in the pictures while the text is being read aloud by an adult, and for the child to feel empowered to follow a visual story that is feeding into the textual narrative. I love using these visual sub-plots to add an exciting dynamic to a picture book.
