Bookroo's summary

Eden, a genie trapped in an antique lamp, escapes to Earth, posing as a middle schooler. She discovers a world far from perfect, entangled in a battle among immortals. As a former genie's organization threatens her new friends, Tyler and Sasha, Eden must protect them and the lamp's magic. Will she find where she truly belongs?

From the publisher

All twelve years of Eden’s life have been spent inside an antique oil lamp. She lives like a princess in her tiny, luxurious home, but to Eden, the lamp is a prison. She hates being a genie. What she wants, more than anything, is freedom. When Eden finds a gateway to Earth within the lamp, she takes her chance and enters the world she loves. And this time, she won’t be sent back after three wishes. Posing as the new kid at a California middle school, Eden revels in all of Earth’s pleasures-but quickly learns this world isn’t as perfect as she thought. Soon, she finds herself in the middle of a centuries-old conflict between powerful immortals. A ruthless organization run by a former genie will do anything to acquire the lamp and its power-even hurt Tyler and Sasha, the new mortal friends who have given Eden a home. To save her friends and protect the lamp’s magic, Eden must decide once and for all where she belongs.

Talk about it together

Tyler’s second granted wish helps Eden see the good in those around her. How might Eden have realized those qualities without the wish being granted, and how can you find the good in those around you?

Eden learns the best part about being a genie from the President. If you were a genie, what wishes would make you most happy to grant?

5.5

I wish the cover image looked more appealing for both genders, but otherwise loved this book with strong characters, the magical genie and lamp aspect, and full of age-appropriate suspense and adventure. It ends with a great message about kindness, doing good, gratitude, and love.
