Los Angeles is . . . surfing waves and fashion faves, citrus fruits and long commutes, lowrider cruising and poolside snoozing, zipping cars and Hollywood stars. From taco trucks to tar pits, this stylish primer to California’s City of Angels, illustrated by Alexander Vidal, is spot-on for toddlers and first-time travelers.
Not many people think of Los Angeles as a city of nature, but it absolutely is in many parts of it. Look out for the possums, coyotes, raccoons and skunks in the book. On the "Canyon Views" page, you can spot P-22, Hollywood's famous animal celebrity. If you don't know who it is, you should look it up and learn about him! By Elisa Parhad (author)
I loved brainstorming every aspect that embodies life in Los Angeles--the good and the bad--and then trying to get it all in the text somehow. Lots of text had to be cut out of the original manuscript because it went from picture book format with 32 pages to a board book with about 10. One thing I love about LA is the vast variety of architectural styles, which I was able to sneak in on the end pages. The most satisfying part though was seeing the text come to life in the illustrations by Alexander Vidal, who nailed it every time. By Elisa Parhad (author)
