What inspired the story behind this book?

One day, I noticed a newspaper article that announced that they were going to remove a number of post boxes from my town. This got me thinking: what if all the post boxes in a young boy's town one day suddenly started disappearing...just two weeks before Christmas! How would this affect Santa's orders? What if the children's wish lists could not get through to Santa? Would Christmas be cancelled if Santa believed no one cared anymore?
