The five stories are shown in publication order. Amy Wu and the Perfect Bao is the best introduction to Amy and her family, but each later school-and-family story can also be enjoyed on its own.

The series warmly presents specific cultural traditions while keeping Amy's frustrations, creativity, and desire to include friends easy for many children to recognize. Chinese words and family knowledge appear naturally in the stories rather than as lessons detached from the plot.
