These are warm family comedies, but they do not avoid hard parts of growing up. Stories include a grandmother's dementia and death, grief, a new baby and sibling jealousy, family arguments, embarrassment, and questions about divorce.
Because the books were published from the late 1970s through the 1990s, some attitudes and references feel dated. Smoking appears, and one comic plot has Anastasia answer a personal ad and unknowingly correspond with an older man; the mistake is not treated as a romance.
