March Books

Read Book One, Book Two, and Book Three in numbered order. The volumes form one continuous memoir, moving from Lewis's childhood and the Nashville sit-ins through the Freedom Rides, the March on Washington, Freedom Summer, and the Selma voting-rights campaign.

Run, Lewis's later graphic memoir, continues his life after the events of March. It is a separate series and is not a fourth March volume.

March is written for teen readers and depicts real racist violence during the civil rights movement. The black-and-white art includes beatings, arrests, bombings, police brutality, threats, murder, and the deaths of children and activists; racist slurs and dehumanizing language appear in historical context.

The trilogy is ultimately hopeful, but it does not soften the danger or grief faced by Lewis and other organizers. Its emphasis on strategy, courage, democratic participation, and nonviolent resistance can support valuable family discussion.
