Rose is a prequel and is best after the main story if your child wants the history behind Gran'ma Ben. Tall Tales and More Tall Tales collect side stories; the handbook is reference material, and Bone is the complete main story in one volume.

The series begins as broad comedy but develops into an epic war story. Children will encounter monsters, chases, battles, threatening dreams, sacrifice, grief, and character deaths. The drawings are expressive rather than graphic, but later volumes are noticeably darker and more intense.
Loyalty, courage, greed, prejudice, and responsibility drive the story. The long plot rewards reading in order, while the humor of the Bone cousins keeps serious material accessible for many middle-grade readers.
