Start with Tales from a Not-So-Fabulous Life and follow the publisher's numbering through Tales from a Not-So-Bratty Little Sister. The books build on Nikki's friendships, family life, and ongoing rivalry, so reading #1–16 in order is the clearest path.
How to Dork Your Diary is sometimes labeled book 3½, but it is a write-in activity book rather than the next part of Nikki's story. Dork Diaries: OMG! All About Me Diary! and the Friendship Box are optional extras too; none replaces a numbered book.
The full-color editions tell the same stories as the originals with newly colored illustrations. Choose either the original or full-color version of a book—you do not need both to continue the plot. Full-color book #2 publishes November 10, 2026 and is not yet included as a published book on this page.

The series centers on middle-school social drama: mean-girl bullying, gossip, insults, jealousy, pranks, embarrassing misunderstandings, crushes, and friendship problems. Conflict is usually comic rather than frightening, with occasional slapstick mishaps and sibling squabbles instead of serious violence.
Nikki's diary voice is emotional, excitable, and full of exaggerated reactions. That high-energy style is part of the fun, but children who are especially sensitive to bullying or secondhand embarrassment may appreciate talking through MacKenzie's behavior and the difference between a bad school day and a lasting crisis.
Choose the first numbered book for Nikki's story, or the full-color version if bright color art is the stronger invitation to read.
