How to Read the Wings of Fire Books

Read the main novels in publisher order, beginning with The Dragonet Prophecy. Books #1–5, #6–10, and #11–15 form three connected five-book arcs. The Hybrid Prince is book #16 and begins the series’ next stage, so the main story is not a good candidate for reading out of order.

For an expanded reading order, read Darkstalker after Escaping Peril (#8) and before Talons of Power (#9). Tui T. Sutherland describes the prequel as a stand-alone story, but recommends reading it before books #9 and #10. Dragonslayer and the Winglets add side stories and history, while the graphic novels retell existing stories and can replace—rather than follow—the matching prose books.

Where to start

Where Should My Child Start?

Choose between the prose and graphic versions of the same opening story, then add the side books once the world and characters are familiar.

Confident fantasy reader

Start with The Dragonet Prophecy and continue through the numbered novels. The plot carries across books and is written for middle-grade readers, generally ages 8–12.

Loves graphic novels

Start with the graphic novel version of The Dragonet Prophecy. It tells the same story as the first chapter book with full-color artwork, so your child can choose the format they enjoy most.

Wants extra background

Read Darkstalker after Escaping Peril (#8) and before Talons of Power (#9). This prequel adds helpful background for the characters and events in the books that follow.

Wants shorter side stories

Try the Winglets after becoming familiar with the first arc. The short stories revisit supporting dragons and fill in events around the main novels.
