Engineering starts with a complaint. The tower keeps falling over. The cardboard ramp is too steep. The paper airplane goes left every single time and nobody knows why. What a child does next — shove a book under one end, add tape, try a fatter wing, try again — is the entire discipline in miniature: define the problem, build the ugly first version, watch it fail, figure out which part failed, change one thing. Engineers are just the people who never stopped doing this, and who eventually got asked to solve the tower problem at 1,400 feet and the ramp problem across a river.
