Bridge Books for Kids

The Best Bridge Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 29, 2026

A bridge begins with a wonderfully unreasonable idea: put a road where there is no ground. The shape changes with the problem — an arch pushing into stone, cables hanging from towers, a truss spreading weight through a web of triangles — but every bridge has to answer the same blunt questions. What must cross? What lies underneath? How far is the gap, and what will keep the whole thing up? Children notice the answers before they know the vocabulary. They watch the deck rise, count the supports, and understand immediately why a troll would choose the narrowest part.

Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of bridge books, our editors chose twelve that cross the subject from several directions: noisy construction for preschoolers, the definitive goat-and-troll read-aloud, animal crossings built over dangerous highways, histories of the Brooklyn, Golden Gate, Mackinac, and Tacoma Narrows bridges, and a graphic engineering tour for older readers. Start with the shortlist, then browse picture books for stories and first explanations or independent-reader books for the designs, people, and forces behind the spans.
