The Best Fall Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 31, 2026

Fall arrives in a child’s world as a series of small, loud facts: the first jacket morning, the crunch underfoot, a tree that was green on Friday and orange by Monday. Squirrels turn frantic, geese get noisy, and everything edible shows up at once — apples, cider, squash, and a pumpkin heavy enough to require two arms and an adult. The best fall books hold still long enough for a child to notice all of it, and then quietly explain why the leaves are doing that.

Bookroo’s collection of 1,273 fall books runs from sturdy first books about leaf piles to orchard and pumpkin-patch trips, harvest stories, autumn poetry, clear science about color and hibernation, and chapter books set in the weeks before the cold arrives. Our editors chose thirteen favorites that cover the whole season rather than one October weekend. Start with the shortlist, then browse by age: board books for toddlers who mostly want to jump in the pile, picture books built for September storytime, and chapter books for readers who can follow a year all the way to the first frost.
