Island of the Blue Dolphins
Karana is left behind when her people sail away, and she spends eighteen years alone on an island off the California coast.
An island is the most useful place a story can put a child. The water does the work a hundred pages of setup would otherwise have to do: nobody is coming, nothing can be fetched, and whatever is on the beach is what you have. That is why islands hold pirates and treasure maps and shipwrecks, but also lighthouse keepers, marooned mice, robots, and one very stuck truck. Real islands are just as good — most of them started as volcanoes, some are barely a rock with a light on it, and the animals that wash up on them tend to turn into something the mainland has never seen.
Bookroo's collection of 317 island books runs from board books a toddler can chew on to survival novels that will keep a fifth grader up past lights-out. Our editors picked twelve that cover the whole map: two Newbery classics about surviving alone, the Caldecott-winning lighthouse and the Caldecott-winning Maine summer, a robot learning to live wild, a genuinely funny picture book about a boat full of mice, a true story about a truck stuck on a bridge, and the pirate novel that invented most of what children think an island is. Start with the shortlist, then browse first island books for little ones, picture books for ages three to eight, and adventure and survival stories for readers ready to be marooned on their own.
