Welcome, Baby!

This simple lift-the-flap board book introduces some interesting vocabulary that accompanies a new baby and is best suited for children who have another sibling on the way to help them become familiar with a few different aspects of taking care of a new child. Creatively-shaped flaps show characters helping with some of baby’s basic needs, like giving the baby their bottle, putting on their pajamas, and laying the baby in their bassinet with a mobile hanging overhead. The book ends on a sweet note of tenderly capturing the love parents feel for a new baby. Very little text is paired with a notably diverse group of characters and families, especially considering the limited number of characters included overall. Bright pages and colorful illustrations are in conformity with Katz’s unique style, though the recognizable font choice and unembellished pages give an unfinished appearance to this read. The flaps create an enjoyable guessing game for young children to show their knowledge about or learn about a new baby. Ultimately the book feels unremarkable, not quite up to par with other book options available for new parents that better measure up to the amazing theme of welcoming home a new baby.
