What was the biggest challenge in creating your first published book?

The same problem I have 20 years later: rejection! I've collected well over 1000 rejection letters along the way to get over 20 books published. This business requires a lot of persistence!

What advice do you have for parents and others who are trying to raise readers?

It's truly not rocket science. My advice is bury your kid in books. Have books of every kind in every room. Never let them go anywhere with out books coming along. But most important: you must model a love of reading for them.

What does a typical work day look like for you?

I am a full-time middle school teacher, so I write whenever I have some free time.

Do you have a favorite children’s book?
