Kaylani Juanita

Kaylani is an illustrator based in Fairfield, CA who illustrates inclusive picture books, editorial art, and afros. Some of her clients include Chronicle Books, Lee & Low Books, Cicada Magazine, and DEFY. Her work has been recognized by Society of Illustrators, The Huffington Post, as well as ELLE Magazine. California grown and raised, she's studied at Cal Arts and CCA for a BFA in Illustration. Her mission as an artist is to support the stories of the under represented and create new ways for people to imagine themselves. You can find her lurking in public secretly drawing strangers or writing nonsensical stories about who knows what.

What do you hope young readers experience from your work?

I hope my work makes young readers feel compassion, empathy, and joy!

What do you do when you're in need of some inspiration?

I think about the stories my family, friends, peers, and I would have needed as children.

If you weren't a children's book author/illustrator, what would you do?

Work at a plant nursery.

Outside of writing/illustrating, what activities do you enjoy?

I really love gardening! I could spend hours looking at and messing with plants.

How did you come to the realization that you wanted to write/illustrate children's books professionally?

I took an amazing children's book class with an AWESOME teacher! Before that class publishing felt like a fantasy.

What do you hope to be remembered for?

I hope to be remembered for creating beautiful worlds, meaningful stories, and unforgettable characters.

What is a goal you'd like to accomplish, either within the field of children's literature, or outside it?

I'd love to teach college illustration in the future!
