While we've never been fans of seeing mice in real life, there are some very delightful and memorable fictional mice in children's literature. From a chapter book about a mouse detective named Basil (who inspired the Disney film) to a series about a group of rats who help a family of mice, we've compiled a list of the best kids books about mice and rats. There are a surprising number of wonderful children's story books about mice and rats, and this list covers them all. On it you'll find familiar characters, like books about a girl mouse named Wemberly (a fun series by Kevin Henkes), classic stories like "The Mouse and the Motorcycle" and "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie," Caldecott medalists like "The Lion & the Mouse," and more. Our lists include three different book types: board, picture, and chapter. Board books are best for the youngest readers, from infants to toddlers. Picture books are great for toddlers to elementary age kids. Chapter books are good for elementary through early middle school age kids. Let us know what you would add to the list!
