“Grandmother School” is the story of one such grandmother. Every morning, Aaji (grandmother in Marathi) puts on her bright pink sari and packs her bag with her abacus, slate, and chalk. She’s excited to go to school! Her granddaughter walks her to school. Inside the school, we see 28 other grandmothers also dressed in bright pink saris, ready to learn. Ajoba (grandfather in Marathi) and his friends thinks this is a waste of time, but the grandmothers continue their quest for learning. When Aaji learns to spell her name, she’s so excited! She immediately goes to the bank to show the man who had always mocked her for using a thumbprint that she can now sign her own name. This is my favorite page! Aaji has been working so hard to read, write, and do arithmetic. In a sweet image, we see the granddaughter tucking Aaji into bed after a long day. Aaji always tells her granddaughter the story of how King Shivaji escaped from a prison, but her dream is to one day read the story from a book.
