Bird & Squirrel Books

Read the seven numbered graphic novels in publication order, beginning with On the Run and ending with All Together. The journeys build on one another: the friends travel, return home, meet family, and eventually bring the wider cast together for the finale.

The plots are easy to follow and each volume has its own adventure, but later books assume readers know the friendships and family connections formed earlier. All Together is the series finale, not a standalone collection.

Predators repeatedly try to eat the heroes, and the travels bring wolves, falls, storms, fire, crashes, racing hazards, amnesia after a head injury, and other cartoon peril. The action is energetic and suspenseful but not graphic.

The emotional center is the contrast between Bird's impulsiveness and Squirrel's anxiety. The books value courage without mocking fear, and they repeatedly return to cooperation, sportsmanship, family, and making room for friends with different temperaments.
