How to Read the Tripods Books

For a first reading, follow publication order: The White Mountains, The City of Gold and Lead, The Pool of Fire, then When the Tripods Came. The first three books form the original trilogy, while the later prequel reveals how the Tripods took control.

Chronological order places When the Tripods Came first, but it was written to supply background after the trilogy. Publication order preserves the gradual discovery of the Tripods' world and is the stronger introduction.

For parents

What Parents Should Know

The series centers on alien conquest and mind control. Young characters face capture, enslavement, physical punishment, weapons, combat, injury, and death while joining a resistance movement; the danger becomes war on a large scale.

When the Tripods Came depicts the collapse of ordinary life and includes the death of a dog. The prose is restrained rather than graphic, but the loss of free will and the willingness to sacrifice lives can be unsettling.
