For a first reading, begin with the His Dark Materials trilogy in order: The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. Then read The Book of Dust as its own #1–3 sequence: La Belle Sauvage, The Secret Commonwealth, and The Rose Field. Although La Belle Sauvage is set earlier, the later trilogy is written with the original story in mind.
The two graphic novels retell The Golden Compass and The Subtle Knife. The short companions can be placed by subject: Once Upon a Time in the North is a Lee Scoresby prequel; Lyra's Oxford and Serpentine follow the original trilogy; The Collectors adds Mrs. Coulter background.
