Children’s Books About Trash & Litter

The Best Children’s Books About Trash, Garbage & Litter

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 27, 2026

Trash is what remains after the useful story seems finished: the bag emptied, the toy broken, the lunch eaten, the truck gone around the corner. Children are unusually good at doubting that ending. A bottle cap can still be a wheel, a heap of metal can still become a forest, and a plastic bag on the ground is not invisible just because the grown-ups have learned to walk past it.

Bookroo’s collection of books about litter, trash, and garbage follows what we throw away from the curb to the landfill, the ocean, the compost heap, and sometimes back into a neighborhood as art. Our editors chose twelve stories and guides that explain the scale of the problem without leaving children helpless: start with the shortlist, then browse picture books for cleanup day and chapter books for readers ready to trace the systems behind the mess.
