The Best Pirate Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 25, 2026

Ask a four-year-old to be something loud and nine times out of ten you get a pirate: one eye squeezed shut, one arm crooked, a voice hauled up from somewhere near the floorboards. It is a costume with a whole grammar attached — the map, the plank, the parrot, the X, the hook — and children learn every word of it years before they can read one. The strange part is how much of it was invented by a Scottish novelist making up a treasure map to entertain a bored stepson, and how cheerfully children’s books have been elaborating on his rumor ever since.

Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 419 pirate books, our editors picked thirteen that hold up once the costume comes off: rowdy read-alouds, a whole suburb’s worth of buried treasure, the first chapter book a six-year-old can finish alone, real women who commanded real fleets, and the Victorian novel the rest of the genre is still quietly borrowing from. Start with the shortlist, then work down the age shelves — board books for toddlers who mostly want the boat noises, picture books for the shouting years, and chapter books for readers ready to be genuinely unsure who on board is on their side.
