The Best Sea Monster Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated August 1, 2026

Every coastline used to have one. Sailors came home with something long and dark keeping pace with the hull, mapmakers filled the empty water with coils and teeth, and “here be monsters” was a respectable way to label the edge of what anyone actually knew. Children get the appeal immediately, because a sea monster is the best kind of unknown: enormous, almost entirely hidden, and possibly directly underneath the boat. The books here take that seriously in every direction — as a mystery worth solving, a beast worth outrunning, a pet who turns out to be shy, and, in the case of the giant squid, a real animal that spent several centuries doing an excellent impression of a myth.

We went through Bookroo’s collection of 69 sea monster books looking for the ones that give the creature something to do besides put a tentacle at the edge of a spread. Our fixed shortlist of 15 favorites runs from a Bill Peet sea serpent with a conscience and a dog buried in seaweed to Percy Jackson’s crossing of the Bermuda Triangle, an award-winning picture book about the deep sea’s largest unsolved case, and the Verne novel that set the whole monster hunt in motion. Start there, then use the age shelves below for read-alouds first and chapter-book expeditions after.
