The Best Summer Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated August 8, 2026

Summer is the season that hands children their own time back. The schedule collapses, the day stretches until the streetlights come on, and the important questions become whether the hose reaches the trampoline and how long a popsicle can survive the walk home. It is also the season of small, specific glories a child will remember for forty years — a diving board that has grown taller since last June, a jar with holes punched in the lid, blueberries going into a pail and then not into the pail, the exact sound a screen door makes at nine at night. Good summer books are built out of those particulars rather than out of the word “fun.”

Bookroo’s collection of 933 summer books covers all of it: first books about sand and sun hats, beach and backyard read-alouds, firefly evenings and lemonade stands, camp stories both idyllic and disastrous, road trips, and novels in which one summer quietly changes everything. Our editors chose twelve favorites that span the whole season and the whole age range. Start with the shortlist, then browse by age below, or follow the related topics toward summer camp, the beach, the pool, or a family vacation.
