This book is gorgeously illustrated and is simultaneously a fun "boat book"—showcasing lots of different kinds of boats with some of their attributes—while also conveying a much deeper and more moving message about independence, letting go, and a deep friendship. This really resonated with me in terms of a parent-child relationship, and how that bond can be strengthened if you let go a little but remain a safe place to always return to.
Toy Boat is a cute little book that makes me think a little bit of The Little Engine That Could. It's not quite as inspiring as that story, but I think little readers will love the chance to see different kinds of boats--from a ferry to a speedboat. The story is about kindness, looking out for others, and finding your way home.

Randall de Seve is the New York Times-bestselling author of Toy Boat, The Duchess of Whimsy, and Mathilda and the Orange Balloon. She lives in Brooklyn, NY, with her husband, two daughters, and a very wicked dog named Henry Biscuit.
Loren Long grew up in Lexington, Kentucky. He pursued graduate-level studies at the American Academy of Art in Chicago after graduating with a BA in Graphic Design/Art Studio from the University of Kentucky. After graduation Long worked as an illustrator for a greeting card company in Cincinnati before beginning his career as a freelance illustrator.Since then, Long has received numerous accolades for his fluid WPA painting style. He has been awarded two gold medals from the Society of Illustrators in New York, and has been frequently selected for their annual exhibition and book. His work has also appeared in many other major annual exhibitions such as American Illustration, Communication Arts, Step By Step Graphics and Print.
