The five books are shown in Macmillan's numbered publication order. Their friendship grows across the series, so Little Elliot, Big City is the best starting point, although each later adventure can still be enjoyed on its own.

These gentle stories often begin with Elliot feeling small, lonely, nervous, or left out, then move toward connection and reassurance. Friendship, found family, trying new things, generosity, and holiday kindness are recurring themes.
