The Best Books About Lost and Found Things

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 25, 2026

Nothing in a young child’s life is more absolute than the moment a lovey is not where it should be. It was in the laundromat, or the car, or possibly the grocery cart — and the child cannot yet describe it well enough for anyone to help. Picture books have been living inside that exact minute for decades, partly because it is the first grief most children can name, and partly because the relief when the thing comes back is one of the very few emotions a two-year-old and a tired adult feel at precisely the same volume. The rest of the shelf works the other side of the counter: a mitten dropped in the snow, a hat somebody is plainly lying about, a marble picked up off a neighbor’s lawn that gets heavier the longer it stays in a pocket.

Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 476 books about lost and found possessions, our editors chose twelve — the lost-lovey classics parents come here looking for, the quieter books about finding something that belongs to somebody else, and middle grade novels where the missing object turns out to be carrying something much larger. Start with the fixed shortlist below, then browse by age: board books for the toddler in the middle of the crisis, picture books for the read-aloud years, and chapter books for readers old enough to go looking on their own.
