A child learns it the afternoon someone could hand over a pot with a flower in it and hands over an empty one instead; learns generosity when the shoes that were wanted all year turn out to fit somebody else better; learns what a promise costs when keeping it means lying to your own family about the dog in the shed. Values are abstractions right up until a story makes someone choose, and then they become the most concrete thing on the page.
